Clear the source before uploading

  1. Confirm ownership or licence of footage, music, voice, performer likeness and visible artwork.

  2. Use your own campaign evidence to decide whether “winning” is justified; otherwise call it an approved reference.

  3. List what remains true: product function, claims, offer and required disclosures.

  4. Define the new audience’s situation without stereotyping or changing factual claims.

  5. Decide between a targeted visual variation and an original narrative adaptation.

  6. Review the complete output and retain the source/rights/change log before publishing.

Write an adaptation brief

Untested brief: “Use our licensed reference ad as the structural starting point. Adapt the setting to a commuter preparing for a rainy morning. Keep the actual product design and approved feature statement unchanged. Create original visuals for this context; do not reuse a competitor’s footage, voice, logo or face. Preserve required disclosures.”

If the audience needs a different objection addressed, change the script deliberately and reapprove it. Swapping a face or background will not automatically make the offer more relevant.

Rights and ethics guardrails

A competitor’s public ad is not licensed simply because you can download it. Do not copy its distinctive shots, branded assets or performer identity; analyse broad storytelling principles and create a new execution using your own inputs. Clear music and voice rights too.

A likeness swap can imply an endorsement that never occurred. Obtain permission for identifiable people and avoid presenting synthetic characters as real customers. Do not fabricate reviews, campaign results or product benefits.

Review and test the new audience version

Check localisation, product availability, currency, landing-page match, pronunciation, cultural context and disclosure. Ensure the new creative stays faithful to the real product.

Test the adapted version under a documented campaign plan. A successful source campaign does not establish performance for a new audience, and the generated output is not a validated winner.
